* If the area of the building is less than 100 m2, the going may be reduced to 250 mm
** For the maximum rise for stairs providing means of access for disabled people, reference should be made to Approved Document M: access and facilities for disabled people.

Steel stairs manufactured to approved document K, Steel stairs manufactured to approved document M and DDA approved steel stairs. Stairs are designed to exceed the minimum design requirement of 4 kN/m2 as set out by BS 6399 : Part 1 : 1996 : Stairs and landings.
TYPES OF STEEL STAIRS
Private Steel Stairs - Residential Steel Stairs
Intended to be used for only one dwelling with a maximum rise of 220mm and a minimum going of 220 mm. A maximum pitch of 42° is stipulated for domestic stairs.
Institutional and Assembly Steel Stairs
Stairs serving a place where a substantial number of people will gather, with a maximum rise of 180 mm and a minimum going of 280 mm.
Covers all other types of buildings, with a maximum rise of 190 mm and a minimum going of 250 mm.
